What makes a business unique? Headquarters? The share capital? Fame and success? Perhaps. Or maybe it's a combination of these things, with a secret ingredient. Empathy.
When I started doing this job, it was 2013, I still had the smell of university on me and I was always afraid of coming second (if not last). Italy is not a country that gives you many uncommon roads to follow for a job...
Let's take a step back to 2012: It was a summer Saturday, hot and muggy. As usual, I was studying some text on criminal law, and between one chapter and another, I came across an interview on television with Gianluca di Marzio, a famous Italian football journalist, who was interviewing a FIFA agent. It opened up a world of what I wanted to become, I certainly knew I wanted to be a FIFA agent. The problem with these "rare" professions (there are around 5,000 of us in the world) is that almost no one explains how they are done in practice. Ok, you pass the exam, but what next? The hard part comes right there.
I go back to the beginning of what I wrote. This job cannot be done without empathy, and without the theoretical - legal knowledge you must have.
This first article wants to express exactly that. I have always believed, and I have surrounded myself with people who think like me, that the closer we get to others, the easier dialogue is. Our work is centered on dialogue. On trust between the parties. Our athletes must trust us, we must trust them, as do the clubs.
We recently unblocked a very complicated negotiation which during the winter transfer window required the collaboration of all of us in the agency, of the sporting directors of the three clubs involved, and of all the athletes. Without dialogue we take a road that is clearly a dead end.
The idea, the "concept" as they say today, is to bring our customers, our "friend" clubs and anyone who follows us on our travels, in our negotiations, closer to our football philosophy. To our way of seeing women's football. This space will be occupied by me and anyone in the agency who would like to express her\his thoughts, ideas or make considerations on what surrounds us in our daily working life. An open book on our world, for all those who often ask us what exactly a women's football agency does.
I picked up as first photos those of friends even before collaborators. Above, Alex (Alexandre Nobre) and I posing with two of our clients after the Portuguese T&P family "derby". On the left, Hector Campos and my partner in life Roberta Ugon. Hector divides his life between Mexico City and Miami (where we met him at SoccerEx 2023 this November) to plan a 2024 strategy for the Americas - but this will definitely enters into a separate article of this blog, especially for the Tornado risk we experienced in Miami.
The power of football is extraordinary, and we are no exception. Here Vlad (Volodymir Levchenko), Roberta and I in Valencia for the renewal of our player Elisha (contractually handled by Roberta herself) in front of a Valencian paella we met again after Vlad moved from New York to Alicante in Spain, from where he can easily meet our clients who play in Spain. Vlad is a former Master's classmate of mine from Lisbon and a hard worker, a valuable asset to the Agency.
